Bangkok - Day 2

Friday, August 4th, 2006

Woke up at about 8am. We had water parade before we left. tried to find our way to the bus stop to Victory Monument. nearly got conned by a self proclaimed high school teacher. He said that he’s a history teacher. Tried to get information from him but he kept on saying that today is Buddism holiday and all office and school will only be open at 2pm. When we asked what about Victory Monument, he said that it will only be open at 2pm. this is when we knew for sure he’s a con. We walked away from him and continued looking. We saw a bunch of people sitting infront of a 7-11. So we though that should be the bus stop. We waited for Bus 53. Finally reached Victory monument. Journey took 1 hour as there were lots of jams. CheeSiang had to piss very urgently so we went to Tops Departmental Store and used the toilet there. Walked by the overhead bridge to the Thailand Girl guides HQ. Bought 2 sausages along the way as we were very hungry. But 4 trefoils, 2 scrafs and 2 friendship badges. Took some photos infront of the guide house too. We took the skytrain to Siam Central Station. Walked to WTC. Bought mango along the way, crunchy but not sweet. tried to look for Pantip Plaza. We looked lost and a plain clothes policeman came forward to assist us. Not much in Pantip Plaza. Lots of old, new and spare PC parts. Saw A&W. Actually wanted to have that for lunch but they do not have what we wanted so we left. Headed back to Pratunam Market. Crowded with mainly clothes and soveniors to see. Finally found Baiyoke Tower and had a look isndie. Nothing much, only clothings. headed back to MBK. Had coconut juice on our way back. Sweet and had lots of fresh. Reach Siam Paragon, did not walk around as there wasn’t much to see. Walked over to MBK and had lunch at 5th floor. I had glass noodles with tom yam soup and CheeSiang had wanton soup, no noodles. We bought the coupon of 120Baht and had 5 Baht left. So went over to the other side for refund. Walked to various floors of the complex. Finished walking MBK and decided to find a Oakley dealer to buy CheeSiang’s Oakley strap. So we headed to Siam Discovery. Went to a bookshop and looked around. Found a shop selling Oakley products. A pretty young lady came out to greet us. We decided not to buy and said thanks to her. She smiled sweetly back. Bought shampoo and body scrub and mile sweets at watson. Wanted to head back to hotel. Went to the opposite bus stop and waited for bus 59 but it never come. We took skytrain back to Victory Monument as we thought that it will be easier to get a bus there. Finally we were on 503. Wasted 3 hours. We were now cold, wet and hungry as it started to rain when we thought of heading back to hotel. Bought 2 pai thai, 1 corn, 1 papaya & watermelon & custard apple back to eat. Day ended after we washed our clothes and sleep. A day that we spent too much time looking for way to go home. But as long as we’re together, I dont mind being under the rain. :D

Bangkok, Thailand - Day 1

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

Checked in at about 7.15am at Row 1 of terminal 1. Went into the boarding area and walked around there. Board the plane at about 9am. Seat number 18 to 28 are able to board the plane first. CheeSiang’s seat is 24A (beside the window) while mine is 24B. Sitting next to me is an Ang Mo guy at his 40s. Tattos all over his arm and smell of ciggrets. Plane started to move at about 9.23am. Take off at about 9.38am. I filled up the Arrival & Departure Card wrongly. Got to get another one from the air stew. Plane got hit by turbulent. Freefall for half a second. Scary! People were screaming everywhere. An ah ma was stuck in the toilet. Your daughter rushed to the toilet regardless of the turbulent. Daughter quickly dragged Ah Ma out of the toilet to an empty seat and hurry back to her own. Ah Ma and some aunties behind us started talking. Ah Ma started telling grandmother story. Ah Ma said that she had experience this before therefore not afraid. Turbulent ended. Daughter came to fetch Ah Ma back to her seat.

Finally touched down at Don Muang Airport at 10.20am. Queeing up to clear custom. An officer took us to another counter. there’s only 1 person in front of us. We sent to the money charger. Rate 23.59B to 1SGD. Changed 400SGD. We had got 9,436B with us now. Walked over to Terminal 1 to go over to the Don Muang railway station. We bought our tickets from the ticketing booth. The woman told us that the train will arrive at 12.40pm. We decided to wait. Paid 20B for our tickets. We bought potato clips and water from the “Mama” shop at the platform at the opposite side. The shopkeeper was a very cheerful and friendly woman. Smiled at us when she knew that we were tourist. Waited for a long time and I noticed that the ticket is for 10:42am. Which it’s over already. We went back to the ticketing booth to look for the aunty but she was no where to be found. We met with this kind police. Looked like a Chinese. We asked him about it and he said should not be a problem. He then chatted with us in Chinese. Train finally arrived. We boarded the train and looked for place to sit. Some inconsiderate people put their legs up on the seat opposite them. We found a seat opposite an old couple. The train conductor walked passed us. As I dont know I’m suppose to show him my ticket, I just hold on to it. The old lady oppsite us showed me the facial expresssion saying that I should show my ticket to the conductor. The train stopped at the next station and the conductor walked his round again. I showed him the tickets this time. he cut ahope on the ticket to indiciate used. CheeSiang started to take photos. Afraid that I’ll be bored, he offered to swap place with me a few times but I rejected. Old couple reached their station. After smiling to us, they walked towards the door. CheeSiang changed seat to the opposite side so that I can move in and sit next to the window. Looking out the window, we can see people’s house. Dirty and noisy place to live in. We finally reach our stop, Bangkok Railway Station (Hua Lamphone). As we were not sure where to take the bus to Khaosan Road, we went to the booth with two girl at their age of 20s. They wrote a note and told us the direction to the bus stop. Bus No. 53. We spent 14B. As it’s about 3pm+, the road was full with buses when we passed by Grand Palace as the place closed at the time. Reached our hotel at about 3.30pm. Checked in. We were given a choice of room number 202 or 302. We took 202 as it’s on the 2nd storey. We went into the room put down our things and changed into our shorts and slippers. We walked to Democracy Monument and Giant Swing. Nothing much. then we went to Prahurat Road. It was all close. Went to this departmental store near it. Walked around looking for towel as the hotel did not provide. It was too expensive and we decided that we will go without. Went to old siam. Had our dinner at MacDonald. Walked back to Khaosan Road. As we were hungry again, we bought 2 corns, one box of semi-circle cake and pad thai. As bangkok’s tap water’s not drinkable, we went to 7-11 to buy a bottle of 6Litres mineral water. Ate our food, washed clothes and went to bed. As the aircon was blowing directly to our face, I felt very cold. Luckily the blanket is thick enough.
